PIMP CHEVROLET COBALT 2010

The Cobalt is pleasant, if not powerful, on the highway. However, reviewers accentuate the positive -- calling attention to the car's great fuel economy or solid ride quality.
The 2010 Chevy Cobalt doesn't have overwhelming engine power from its base 2.2-liter engine, plus neither the five-speed manual transmission nor the four-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission has the gumption to leave its competition in the slow lane. But test drivers are very pleased with the car's fuel economy. According to the EPA, the base engine rates at 22/30 mpg with the manual transmission, and 24/33 mpg with the automatic.

PIMP CHEVROLET CAMARO 2010

new Camaro's strong powertrain and sporty handling dynamics -- which give V6 competitors like the G8, Mustang and Challenger a run for their money.
The Camaro LS, 1LT, and 2LT feature a 3.6-liter V6 engine that produces 304 horsepower at 6,400 rpm and 273 pound-feet of torque at 5,200 rpm. Critics commend Chevy for engineering the Camaro to be more powerful than its V6 competitors, but find its low-end torque lacking.
Car shoppers should note that unlike its rivals, the Camaro is only available with two engine options, the 304-horsepower V6 and the high-performance SS trim's 426-horsepower V8. Meanwhile, competitors like the G8, Mustang and Challenger offer intermediate trims that provide V8 power, but don't directly compete with the SS. For that purpose, each muscle car offers its own high-performance model.
The V6 Camaro is mated to a standard six-speed manual transmission. However, a six-speed automatic transmission with tapshift control is available. According to the EPA, the manual Camaro nets a city/highway fuel economy of 17/29 mpg. The automatic nets 18/29 mpg. Altogether, the V6 Camaro's fuel economy is competitive for this class.

PIMP CHEVROLET AVEO 2010

the 2010 Chevy Aveo's driving excitement to the thrill of watching grass grow. But on the plus side, both the sedan and hatchback get great gas mileage, and handling is pleasing for a city commute.
With a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine that ekes out 103-horsepower and 107 pound-feet of torque, the 2010 Chevy Aveo has no brawn to speak of. Not only that, but acceleration is slow with the five-speed manual transmission or the four-speed automatic. Still, most reviewers say that the car does well with the power it has. The Aveo still has a marginal advantage over much of its class when it comes to fuel economy. According to the EPA, both the Aveo and the Aveo5 should achieve 27/34 mpg city/highway with a manual transmission, and 25/34 mpg city/highway with the automatic.

PIMP CHEVROLET AVALANCE 2010

The Avalanche's performance is good for a truck, but car-buyers trading up for the first time might be disappointed. A stiffer frame and new suspension and steering systems, acquired during a 2007 redesign, help somewhat but reviewers still complain about an anemic engine and lackluster handling. Towing and hauling capabilities are high points, however.
The Avalanche comes one engine, a 5.3-liter V8 with Active Fuel Management. Most reviewers say the engine is fine for in-town driving, but its performance on the highway leaves feels slow. The Avalanche's engine features cylinder deactivation technology for increased fuel economy. It automatically shuts down four cylinders when they are not needed, like when the vehicle is cruising at speed or coasting. All engines are paired with a Hydra-Matic six-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission with overdrive that reviewers like.

PIMP CADILLAC STS 2012

The basic STS comes with a 3.6-liter V6 engine that makes 302 horsepower and uses variable valve timing to maximize thrust. Reviewers say the V6 is powerful enough for any driver. A 4.6-liter Northstar V8 that makes 320 horsepower is also available, and reviewers like it as well, but many say it isn't necessary or worth its cost. Only a six-speed automatic transmission, which can be shifted manually, is offered.
The STS handles fairly well, with a suspension system reviewers love and assisted steering some find overly light. Its brakes are a highlight.

PIMP CADILLAC SRX 2012

The 2010 Cadillac SRX offers two engines -- a base 3.0-liter V6 that makes 265 horsepower and an optional 2.8-liter turbocharged V6 that makes 300 horsepower. Since both are now direct-injection engines, fuel economy and power have increased from the 2009 model. Both engines are paired with a six-speed automatic transmission.
Some reviewers say the base engine can be sluggish because of its low torque output. They recommend the turbocharged V6. However, that engine is available for AWD Performance and Premium trims only -- which means it adds a whopping $15,000 to the SRX’s base price. Make sure you really need that extra power before spending the money.
According to the EPA, the front-wheel-drive base model achieves 18/25 mpg city/highway, while the all-wheel-drive model achieves 17/23 mpg. The EPA does not have ratings for the turbocharged engine, but Cadillac estimates it will also be rated at 17/23 mpg. The SRX’s base rating is one of the best in its class. But if you want better fuel economy, consider a midsize SUV like the Lexus RX Hybrid. It has a best-in-class 32/28 mpg rating. However, it costs $9,000 more than the SRX, so even the fuel savings may not save you money in the long run.
the 2010 Cadillac SRX shines for its especially smooth and powerful performance. It boasts a more car-like ride and better fuel economy than before. Test drivers like the fun driving experience, even going so far as to say it's good enough to compete with the Lexus RX 350.

PIMP CADILLAC ESCALADE HYBRID 2012

On the whole, reviewers are pleased with the 2010 Cadillac Escalade Hybrid's performance, noting it closely matches that of the conventional Escalade. That means that the hybrid shares some problems with the regular Escalade. Namely, its larger size requires extra driver attention. Reviewers also notice that the transition from the electric motor to the gas engine isn't quite seamless, and that the Escalade Hybrid's gas mileage, while good for a large SUV, isn't quite in the same league as smaller hybrids.
While the Escalade Hybrid does have improved fuel economy over the conventional Escalade, reviewers report that the SUV still drinks too much gas to satisfy most environmentalists. Some also complain that in order to achieve the best fuel economy, drivers must relegate themselves to the slow lane. The two-wheel drive Escalade hybrid has a 20/21 city/highway fuel economy rating from the EPA, and a 20 mpg combined rating.

PIMP CADILLAC ESCALADE EXT 2012

Even though the 2010 Escalade EXT is a big, heavy vehicle, it has a surprisingly car-like ride that's coupled with impressive thrust from its V8 engine. Still, the steering and braking get mixed reviews
Only a single engine is available for the nearly 6,000-pound Escalade EXT, and it's a big one: a 6.2-liter V8 that can generate 403 horsepower, plenty of low-end torque and a towing capacity of 7,600 pounds. By and large reviewers think this engine is great, but a few say that even this much power can barely keep up with the EXT's bulk. The EXT comes with a Hydra-Matic six-speed automatic transmission with a Driver Shift Control manual mode. Reviewers say the transmission performs smoothly.
For 2010, the Cadillac Escalade EXT's engine has active fuel management technology, which saves fuel by shutting down four of the engine's eight cylinders when they are not needed. The EPA has not released new fuel economy estimates for the EXT.

NEW CADILLAC ESCALADE 2010

The Escalade comes standard with a V8 engine, rear wheel drive and a six-speed automatic transmission that is popular with reviewers. A wide stance and auto-sensing suspension keep the ride smooth, but during test drives, reviewers noticed the Escalade's size means the SUV demands a lot of driver attention, which is typical for a large SUV.
The 2010 Cadillac Escalade comes with a 6.2-liter V8 engine, mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. Most reviewers note that though this is the same engine in the GMC Denali, it has been tuned to make more horsepower in the Escalade. Most reviewers like the extra power and give the Escalade good marks for acceleration.
Cylinder deactivation, a fuel saving technology, is new on the 2010 Escalade. The system shuts down four of the engine's eight cylinders when they're not needed (like when the Escalade is cruising or at idle). That saves fuel. The EPA gives two-wheel drive Escalade a combined fuel economy rating on 16 miles per gallon.

PIMP CADILLAC DTS 2012

The Cadillac DTS is built for highway cruising. Its suspension is tuned for a soft ride, its turning circle is wide, and its big V8 moves the heavy car well enough for highway passing -- but not so quickly that it can compete with the cars at the top of its class. A Performance trim level outhandles the ordinary DTS.
The 2010 DTS is powered by a 4.6-liter Northstar V8 engine making 275 horsepower. Power travels through a four-speed automatic transmission -- a serious flaw, the press says, in a year when even other GM products generally use six-speed models. The result is a car that lacks serious thrust compared to most luxury sedans -- but the DTS never had sporting pretensions. It's strong enough to get to highway speed quickly and pass easily. Performance models get 300 horsepower out of the same engine, but it doesn't change the fuel economy rating. The DTS gets an EPA-estimated fuel economy rating of 15 miles per gallon in the city and 22 on the highway -- the lowest fuel economy in this class.

PIMP CADILLAC CTS SPORT WAGON 2012

The 2010 CTS Sport Wagon offers two engine options. Base and Luxury trims feature a 3.0-liter V6 engine that produces 270-horsepower at 7,000 rpm and 223 pound-feet of torque at 5,700 rpm. Meanwhile, Performance and Premium trims come equipped with a 3.6-liter V6 engine that generates 304-horsepower at 6,400 rpm and 273 pound-feet of torque at 5,200 rpm. A six-speed automatic transmission is standard for all trims.
According to the EPA, the CTS Sport Wagon nets a city/highway fuel economy ranging from 18/26 to 18/27 mpg, depending on engine and drivetrain.

PIMP CADILLAC CTS 2012

The base engine of the 2010 Cadillac CTS is a 3.6-liter V6 that makes 263 horsepower and 253 pound-feet of torque. Reviewers say it offers plenty of punch and highway passing power. The more advanced option is a Direct Injection version of the same engine. This is the first direct-injection engine an American automaker has built. It pumps pressurized gasoline directly into cylinders in a fine mist, resulting in a higher power output than traditional fuel injection without the need for turbochargers -- and, according to GM -- with cleaner emissions. That engine creates 304 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque -- and has allowed some test drivers to manage zero-to-sixty times under 6.5 seconds.
Either engine is available paired with a six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed automatic with manual capability -- although a few reviewers criticize Cadillac for not pairing that transmission with paddle shifters, opting for a slightly awkward console-mounted shifter instead. The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that, in various configurations, the CTS manages 16 to 18 miles per gallon in the city and 25 to 26 mpg on the highway.

PIMP BUICK LUCERNE 2012

The 2010 Lucerne is available with a 3.9-liter V6 engine making 227 horsepower or a Northstar V8 making 275. Both are weak engines for their size -- competitors offer more powerful, more fuel-efficient options in both V6 and V8 powerplants. Both are available only with an antiquated four-speed automatic transmission, while most competitors offer five- or six-speeds even in base models. Reviewers say the V8 is enough power for the car's weight, but the V6 isn't. The EPA estimates that V6-powered Lucernes should get 17 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway, while V8 models are rated for just 15/22 mpg.

PIMP BUICK LA CROSSE 2012

In the recent past, Buicks were known as slow, sluggish and floaty cars. Their ride was a throwback to an earlier time, and they lagged well behind the performance of most modern sedans. With the 2010 LaCrosse, all that has changed. Test drivers say the 2010 LaCrosse is a capable performer. It offers confident acceleration with either of its two available engines, and while it doesn't handle with the sharpness of a sport sedan, reviewers say it handles as well as any family sedan and should easily meet the needs of most drivers.
The LaCrosse is available with a choice of two V6 engines. A 3.0-liter unit making 255 horsepower drives the CX and CXL model, while a larger 3.6-liter engine putting out 280 horsepower powers the CXS edition. Reviewers like both engines, but the smaller of the two is so capable that there may be little reason to pay for the added power of the larger engine. The only transmission offered is a six-speed automatic. The EPA has given the LaCrosse a 17/25 mpg rating when equipped with the 3.0-liter engine, and 17/27 mpg with the 3.6.

PIMP BUICK ENCLAVE 2012

The Buick Enclave provides smooth, sedan-like performance, and is even fun to drive. Thanks to a horsepower boost in 2009, the Enclave also provides more than adequate acceleration. Still, a few reviewers would like to see a more powerful V8 engine option.
The Enclave comes with a 3.6-liter V6 engine that makes 288 horsepower. It's paired with a six-speed automatic transmission that some test drivers say is slow to downshift. Test drivers find power adequate enough, but some wish a more powerful option was available.
According to the EPA, FWD models achieve 17/24 mpg city/highway, while AWD models achieve 16/22. These ratings are only about average for the affordable midsize SUV class. If you’re looking for better fuel economy, your best bet is the Honda Accord Crosstour. Though its in the affordable wagons class, it matches the Enclave’s luxurious interior while providing a more impressive 18/27 fuel economy rating -- all for a price that’s about $6,000 less.

PIMP BMW Z4 2012

BMW Z4 PHOTO
The 2010 BMW Z4 ranks 8 out of 9 Luxury Sports Cars. This ranking is based on our analysis of 28 published reviews and test drives of the BMW Z4, and our analysis of reliability and safety data.
The 2010 BMW Z4 is bigger and badder than ever before. Plus, it now features a standard retractable hard top that lowers in just 20 seconds. One of the best all-around roadsters in this highly-competitive class, the 2010 BMW Z4 was named a finalist in Motor Trend's showdown for "Car of the Year."
Reviewers report that the 2010 BMW Z4 is the total package. It's sexy, luxurious, and sporty enough to wow most drivers. "While some premium roadster drivers are serious about power, handling and feel, a good many are more interested in style and fresh-air fun," writes Kelley Blue Book. "In a segment that includes the Porsche Boxster, Mercedes-Benz SLK and Audi TT, no car can appeal to both camps more so than the latest Z4. Inside, outside and underneath, the Z4 has the makings of one of the all-time great roadsters."
Still, the 2010 BMW Z4 isn't perfect. Critics complain that the Z4 lacks adequate cargo room and its steering system feels numb. As a whole, however, the 2010 BMW Z4 leaves reviewers nothing short of satisfied.

PIMP BMW X6 2012

BMW X6 PHOTO
The NEW BMW X6 base xDrive35i model features a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine that makes 300 horsepower. Likewise, the xDrive50i comes with a 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8. Test drivers offer praise for both engines, noting they provide fantastic acceleration for a midsize SUV. They are both paired with a six-speed automatic transmission which comes with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters for a sportier experience.
The new ActiveHybrid X6 is one of the most powerful hybrid vehicles on the market. It boasts a 4.4-liter V8 that makes a staggering 400 horsepower. It’s paired wit two electric motors that make 90 and 84 horsepower, respectively. The hybrid is mated to a seven-speed automatic transmission with manual mode. Test drivers have high praise for the hybrid’s powertrain, noting that acceleration is excellent in any situation.
The EPA rates the 2010 xDrive35i at 15/21 mpg city/highway, while the xDrive50i offers a lesser 13/18 mpg rating. Fuel economy isn't a strong point for the X6, although it's about the norm for a luxury midsize SUV -- unless, that is, you shell out big bucks for the ActiveHybrid X6. The EPA has not yet rated it, but BMW estimates it will get 19 miles per gallon in the city. However, the ActiveHybrid also starts at nearly $89,000, so don’t fool yourself by thinking it will save you money on gas.
For higher fuel economy without the painfully high sticker price, consider the Lexus RX 350, which boasts an 18/25 mpg rating and costs a whopping $20,000 less than the base X6. The Infiniti FX's 16/23 mpg rating is also excellent for the class, and it costs several thousand less than the X6.

PIMP BMW X5 2012

BMW X5 PHOTO
The NEW BMW X5 2010 xDrive30i comes with a 3.0-liter in-line six-cylinder engine that makes 260 horsepower, while the xDrive48i comes with a 4.8-liter V8 that makes 350 horsepower. The xDrive35d comes with a 3.0-liter 265-horsepower six-cylinder Advanced Diesel twin-turbocharged engine. All engines are paired with a six-speed automatic transmission with manual mode. Test drivers find that both gasoline engines offer impressive power, though a few aren't as impressed with the diesel's acceleration.
The EPA rates the 2010 X5 30i base model at 15/21 mpg city/highway, while the 48i V8 model achieves 14/19 mpg. These figures are unimpressive and on the average to low side for their class. However, the diesel model substantially increases fuel economy by achieving 19/26 mpg, making it one of the more fuel-efficient SUVs in the class.
For even better fuel economy without shelling out for a diesel model, consider the Lexus RX 350. It will save you a whopping $10,000 or more compared to the cost of the X5 and boasts an 18/25 mpg rating.

PIMP BMW X3 2012

BMW X3 PHOTO
The NEW BMW X3 2010 Critics feel the engine in the BMW X3 offers plenty of power. It comes with a 3.0-liter 260-horsepower inline six-cylinder engine and is paired with either a six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed automatic (a no-cost option).
The EPA has not yet rated the 2010 model, but 2009 automatic models are rated at 17/24 mpg city/highway, while manual models are rated at 16/23 mpg. These figures are about average for the class, but a few SUVs offer higher fuel economy at even lower prices. The Audi Q5 starts at about $2,000 less and gets an 18/23 mpg rating and offers similarly sporty handling. The Acura RDX is also worth consideration since it costs about $4,000 less and boasts an even better 19/24 mpg rating.

PIMP BMW HYDROGEN 7

BMW HYDROGEN
The BMW Hydrogen 7 has all the same suspension and steering components as the 2007 edition of the conventionally-powered BMW 7-Series - one of the most agile large sedans in the world. Its propulsion system, however, is completely unique among production cars. It features a version of the V12 engine that powers the gasoline-only BMW 760Li, modified to accept either gasoline or liquid hydrogen. The system doesn't match the acceleration of the 760Li, but it replicates the acceleration of some less-expensive cars or SUVs.
The BMW Hydrogen 7 uses a version of the V12 that powers the 2007 edition of the BMW 7-Series, modified to burn either gasoline or liquid hydrogen. The vehicle carries one fuel tank for each of its fuel sources, and can switch back and forth between the two with the flick of a switch. Reviewers say the transition between fuels is so smooth it is undetectable to the driver. The car is not as powerful as a conventional 7-Series and makes 260 horsepower with either fuel source. That gives it acceleration on par with an inexpensive midsize car, according to most test drivers. BMW has not released fuel economy estimates for the car, nor has the Environmental Protection Agency published a figure.

PIMP BMW 7 SERIES 2012

BMW 7 SERIES PHOTO
The BMW 7-Series is one of the top performers in a class made up of the world's finest cars. Its V8 is a touch smaller than those offered by some competitors, but with twin turbochargers and direct-injection, it can outperform many larger engines. Its handling is unparalleled in the large car class. And its Driving Dynamics Control system allows the driver to choose levels of performance - Comfort, Normal, Sport and Sport Plus - each with its own suspension and steering settings.

PIMP BMW 6 SERIES 2012

BMW 6 SERIES PHOTO
the BMW 6-Series' powerful 4.8-liter V8 engine. It produces 360-horsepower at 6,300 rpm and 360 pound-feet of torque at 3,400 rpm. Though a six-speed manual transmission with Dynamic Driving Control is standard, a sport automatic transmission with shift paddles is available at no additional cost. According to BMW, both the 650i Coupe and Convertible have a top speed of 150 mph. However, the Coupe's ability to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in only 5.3 seconds trumps the Convertible by 0.3 seconds.
The EPA reports a city/highway fuel economy of 15/22 mpg with the manual 650i Coupe and 14/21 mpg with the manual 650i Convertible. Both automatic models net 15/13 mpg.

PIMP BMW 5 SERIES 2012

BMW 5 SERIES PHOTO
The 2011 BMW 5-Series is offered with a choice of two engines, both entirely new designs. The 535i uses a 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine with a single turbocharger (it’s easy to get confused here, because BMW calls it a “twinpower turbo,” but it’s just one turbocharger). It puts out 300 horsepower. Reviewers are very impressed with that engine, though a vocal minority says it isn’t as responsive as most BMW powerplants.
The 550i uses a 4.4-liter, turbocharged V8, making 400 horsepower. Many note that it is more powerful and more fuel-efficient than the V8 offered in last year’s 5-Series, but few reviewers have driven this version.
Both engines come mated to either a six-speed manual transmission (the last stick-shift offered in the Luxury Large Car class), or an eight-speed automatic. Reviewers are fond of the automatic, saying it tends to hunt for gears much less than most seven- or eight-speed transmissions. An optional Steptronic sport package adds paddle shifters to the automatic. BMW loyalists should note that the 2011 5-Series uses conventional paddle shifters -- upshift with the right paddle, downshift with the left -- instead of the unusual thumb shifters found on other BMW products.
The EPA has not yet released fuel economy estimates for the 2011 5-Series. BMW estimates that 550i models should get 15/22 mpg with the manual transmission, or 17/25 mpg with the automatic. The company has not published a mileage estimate for the 535i.

NEW BMW-3 SERIES WAGON 2010

BMW-3 SERIES WAGON PHOTO
THE NEW BMW-3 SERIES WAGON 2010 Both the BMW 328i and 328i xDrive feature a 3.0-liter I6 engine that test drivers find is smooth and adequate. It generates 230-horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 200 pound-feet of torque at 2,750 rpm. Though a six-speed manual transmission is standard, a STEPTRONIC automatic is optional.
According to the EPA, the 3-Series wagon's city/highway fuel economy ranges from 17/25 mpg to 18/27 mpg, depending on trim and transmission.
Test drivers, on balance, agree that the BMW 3-Series wagon shines most brightly in the category of handling -- especially the 328i xDrive, which features a standard all-wheel drive system that enhances stability in adverse driving conditions.

NEW BMW-3 SERIES COUPLE 2010

BMW-3 SERIES COUPLE 2010 PHOTO
THE NEW BMW-3 SERIES 2010 Buyers who gravitate toward BMWs instead of Acuras or Lexuses are usually interested in performance. Today's rear-wheel-drive 3-series won't let them down. It offers three powerful engines, and a chassis and suspension tuned for aggressive handling. While some rivals have caught up to the 3-series in terms of driving excitement, none have passed it. But buyers should be aware that performance comes with a price. BMW has done a good job building a car that's comfortable for a sport sedan, but this is still a sporty sedan, jumpier than the sedate cruisers Lexus and Acura build at this price point.
The 3-Series is available with three engines, and each is exceptional in its own way. BMW avoids the V6 engines that so many manufacturers depend on, instead using a 3.0-liter inline-6-cylinder engine on 328 models. That engine produces 230 horsepower and 200 pound-feet of torque, and depending on which other performance options are selected, earns an EPA rating of 17/15 or 18/28 mpg. 335 models get the same engine with a pair of turbochargers added, which boosts both hp and torque ratings to 300. That engine is rated for 17/26 mpg. A twin-turbo diesel option hasn't sold well since its introduction in mid 2009, but it may be the most impressive of the bunch. It makes a white-knuckle, pulse-pounding 425 lb-ft of torque, while carrying an EPA rating of 23/33 mpg. The standard 3-Series has a six-speed manual transmission, but an automatic, with or without paddle shifters, is available for any trim.

NEW BMW-1 SERIES COUPLE 2010

NEW BMW-1 SERIES COUPLE 2010 PHOTO
THE NEW BMW-1 SERIES 2010 Performance is where the 2010 BMW 1-Series excels. Reviewers say the 1-Series is a brilliant performer, with plenty of engine power, a smooth-as-silk transmission, precise cornering and confident braking. Nonetheless, for all of this impressive performance, the 1-Series falls well short of its mark when it comes to fuel economy.
Auto experts report that both the 128i and 135i 1-Series have enough power to outpace most of their class. However, that power comes at the expense of good gas mileage.
All 1-Series models come with the same 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine that you'll find in the 3-series. That said, while the 128i spits out an impressive 230 horsepower, the 135i is packing a full 300 horses, which help it to rocket from 0 to 60 miles an hour in 5.1 seconds. A six-speed manual transmission comes standard on all models, although a six-speed automatic is available for an additional $1,325.
The EPA has not yet rated the new 2010 1-Series, but it rated the 2009 model at an average of 18 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway - a highly unimpressive rating for the class. Although some models fare better than others, the 135i coupe with the manual transmission gets the worst rating of 17/25 mpg city/highway -- which is low for the class. If fuel economy is important to you, check out the Volkswagen GTI. It has the highest fuel economy of any car in its class (21/31 mpg city/highway), boasts performance that's on par with the 1-Series and a starting price of about $6,000 less than the BMW.

NEW AUDI TT 2010

NEW AUDI TT 2010 PHOTO
THE NEW AUDI TT 2010 Performance-capsule review of the 2009 Audi S8. It is based on our analysis of 32 published reviews and test drives.
The 2009 Audi S8 is large, luxurious and thrilling to drive. Combining elegance with high-performance engineering, the S8 garners praise from critics and enthusiasts alike
The S8 is a performance-tuned variant of Audi's top-of-the-line luxury sedan, the A8. Equipped with a 450-horsepower ten-cylinder engine and outfitted in typical-Audi fashion, the S8 is as much of a performer as it is a luxury sedan. "Just as sports cars are getting more comfortable, luxury cars are becoming more athletic," writes Kelley Blue Book. "A key enabler on the luxury side is the latest generation of dynamic suspension systems that can change from firm to soft in a matter of milliseconds and eliminate the need for engineers to seek one particular compromised spot between ride and handling.

NEW AUDI S4

NEW AUDI S4 PHOTO
The NEW AUDI S4 2010, 2008 Audi S4 sedan impresses reviewers with its combination of good looks and sophisticated performance. Still, auto writers criticize its back seat for only being suitable for children.
The majority of auto writers find the S4 sedan to be an exquisite vehicle. The Kansas City Star explains: "The S4 is the sportiest version of the A4, and the combination of a tight suspension, blustery V-8 and all-wheel drive create a four-seat sports car that is seriously quick and a blast to drive." In addition to these performance attributes, the S4 features a refined interior cabin and plenty of standard active and passive safety features. Still, the S4 is not perfect. Reviewers find its back seat cramped and optional navigation system difficult to operate.
The 2008 Audi S4 is available in three body styles: Sedan, Avant (wagon), and Cabriolet (convertible).

NEW AUDI RS-4

NEW AUDI RS-4 PHOTO
The NEW AUDI RS-4 2010 following is a performance-capsule review of the 2008 Audi RS-4. It is based on our analysis of 38 published reviews and test drives.
The 2008 Audi RS4 is a four-door sedan. The RS4 has one standard engine. The 4.2 liter V8 makes 420 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque. Quattro all-wheel drive is standard.
The RS4 has seating for five and comes standard with 12-way sport power driver and front passenger Recaro® Sport seats, an Audi symphony AM/FM stereo with in-dash 6-disc CD changer and a multifunction sports steering wheel. An optional premium package includes auto-dimming mirrors, a navigation system, BOSE premium sound system, heated rear seats, Homelink, a power rear sunshade and Bluetooth capability.

NEW AUDI R8

NEW AUDI R8 PHOTO
The NEW AUDI R8 2010 R8's engine choices thrill auto writers. However, its transmission systems receive mixed reviews
Audi provides two engine options. The R8 4.2 features a 4.2-liter V8 engine that produces 420 horsepower at 7,800 rpm and 317 pound-feet of torque at 4,500 to 6,000 rpm. The all-new R8 5.2 packs a 5.2-liter V10 engine that generates 525 horsepower at 8,000 rpm and 391 pound-feet of torque at 6,500 rpm. While both feature a six-speed gated manual transmission as standard, an R tronic automatic is optional.
Audi reports that the R8 4.2 can reach a top speed of 187 mph and accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds. However, the more powerful R8 5.2 has a top speed of 196 mph and accelerates from 0 to 60 in just 3.9 seconds.
According to the EPA, the manual R8 4.2 has a meager city/highway fuel economy of 12/19 mpg, while the automatic can reach 13/18 mpg. Meanwhile, the R8 5.2 nets 12/20 mpg with the manual and 13/20 mpg with the automatic.

NEW AUDI Q7

NEW AUDI Q7 PHOTO
The NEW AUDI Q7 2010. This ranking is based on our analysis of 82 published reviews and test drives of the Audi Q7, and our analysis of reliability and safety data.
The 2010 Audi Q7 delivers distinctive elegance, spacious cargo room and lots of safety features. However, its high price and low fuel economy mean there are plenty of others in this class that offer more for the money.
The Q7 fits the bill as a luxury family SUV, offering excellent safety features, six- or seven-passenger seating, and a luxurious interior. "Many luxury features, excellent build quality and a smart-looking interior make the 2010 Audi Q7 a solid choice for a seven-passenger luxury crossover SUV,” writes Edmunds. “However, the Q7 isn't the quickest or roomiest crossover on the block."
Unless you buy the turbodiesel model, the Q7 just doesn't offer the same overall value as class competitors. With prices that begin at nearly $47,000 and can climb past $60,000, the Q7 is one of the more expensive vehicles in its class. The Q7 also achieves poor fuel economy -- at 14/19 mpg city/highway, its base engine's gas mileage is easily bested by more affordable rivals from Lexus and Cadillac.
However, the Q7 turbodiesel's 17/25 rating tops nearly all of its competitors -- but it also costs about $4,000 more than the other Q7 models. Because of its environmentally progressive nature, Road & Travel Magazine named the Q7 TDI Clean Diesel model its 2010 Earth, Wind & Power Truck of the Year.

NEW AUDI Q5

NEW AUDI Q5 PHOTO
The NEW AUDI Q5 2010 Audi Q5 ranks 1 out of 8 Luxury Compact SUVs. This ranking is based on our analysis of 18 published reviews and test drives of the Audi Q5, and our analysis of reliability and safety data.
The Audi Q5 provides one of the best combinations of spectacular performance, an ultra-luxury cabin and a stunning exterior in its class. As Audi's first luxury compact SUV, it's slotted below the midsize Q7 and is based on the same platform as the A4 sedan.
Reviewers have plenty of praise to offer this young SUV, going so far as to say that its performance rivals sport sedans. With standard all-wheel drive, it’s surefooted in slippery conditions and downright fun to drive when the pavement is dry. "Q5 offers a level of refinement and cargo AND passenger versatility unmatched by most compact SUVs," writes Consumer Guide. "Those strengths, coupled with first-rate cabin appointments, put it at the head of the class.”
So far, the Q5's only major downside is its steep base price, which can skyrocket once you start adding options. It starts at just over $37,000, making it more expensive than every car in its class except the BMW X3. A smaller sticking point is that it only offers a six-cylinder engine. Reviewers had hoped a more fuel-efficient option would be offered for 2010, but a hybrid model is now expected instead for 2011. But even without a hybrid option, the Q5 achieves very good fuel economy for its class. Its 18/23 city/highway rating is second only to the Acura RDX, which is rated at 19/24.

NEW AUDI A8

NEW AUDI A8 PHOTO
THE NEW AUDI A8 2010,In its last year before a major redesign, Audi has trimmed the A8 lineup significantly -- but the car that remains is still one of the most athletic and luxurious Super Luxury Cars. Its cabin outclasses some of the world’s finest cars, while sure-footed Quattro All-Wheel-Drive gives it a secure, planted feel.
Audi will introduce an entirely new flagship A8 for the 2011 model year -- but that doesn’t mean buyers should overlook the 2010 edition currently sitting on dealership lots. It’s still an exceptional car, and it is possible that the arrival of the 2011 A8 could push prices of the current model down, creating a unique buying opportunity in mid-2010.
The A8 has a distinct personality within the hyper-competitive Super Luxury Sedan class. It offers what many reviewers consider one of the finest interiors of the group, with exemplary Valcona leather and real wood trim, and one of the easiest-to-use electronics interfaces available on a premium car. It’s remarkably agile for a heavy, full-size car. Quattro All-Wheel-Drive gives it confident road manners, and precise steering makes it perhaps the most nimble car in its class. It also carries one of the lowest entry prices of the group.

NEW AUDI A6 WAGON

NEW AUDI A6 WAGON PHOTO WALLPAPER
The NEW AUDI A6 WAGON 2010 Audi A6 Wagon ranks 4 out of 7 Luxury Wagons. This ranking is based on our analysis of 29 published reviews and test drives of the Audi A6 Wagon, and our analysis of reliability and safety data.
The 2010 Audi A6 Avant combines practicality with luxury and beauty -- a winning combination. It's even a Consumer Guide "Recommended Buy."
Having undergone a refresh in '09, the A6 Avant carries into 2010 unchanged -- which is just fine by critics who hail it as a success. In fact, Kelley Blue Book calls it "the ideal vehicle for the socially mobile family in need of generous interior space and all-wheel-drive capability, but not at all interested in an SUV."
In 2009, the A6 Avant received a new engine, revised suspension and all-wheel-drive settings, as well as exterior and interior updates. Though it hasn't been extensively tested, those who have driven it are impressed.

NEW AUDI A6

NEW AUDI A6 PHOTO
The NEW AUDI A6 2010 Audi A6 ranks 5 out of 13 Luxury Large Cars. This ranking is based on our analysis of 59 published reviews and test drives of the Audi A6, and our analysis of reliability and safety data.
The Audi A6 combines exceptional performance with one of the finest interiors offered in the Large Luxury Car class.
The Audi A6 tends to trail behind the BMW 5-Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class in terms of sales -- but that could be a sign that Americans are missing out on a very capable car.
The Audi A6 has one of the nicest interiors available, even at its price. It's also a fine performer.
The A6 received a design refresh for 2009, so little has changed for 2010.
The key to the A6's appeal is the optional Quattro All-Wheel-Drive Sstem. Reviewers say that, without Quattro, it doesn't handle as well as some competitors; but with Quattro, it's the almost the equal of the canyon-carving BMW 5-Series. The A6 also outclasses the BMW, and many other rivals, with its well-designed passenger cabin (reviewers love the available cocoa leather).
Just as the optional AWD system makes a dramatic difference in the car's performance, a buyer's choice of engine can radically change the character of this car. Reviewers are particularly impressed with the available 3.0-liter supercharged V6, which offers smooth power delivery and accelerates like a V8, but offers the fuel economy of a V6.

NEW AUDI A4 WAGON

NEW AUDI A4 WAGON PHOTO
The NEW AUDI A4 WAGON 2010 Audi A4 Wagon ranks 2 out of 7 Luxury Wagons. This ranking is based on our analysis of 18 published reviews and test drives of the Audi A4 Wagon, and our analysis of reliability and safety data.
The 2010 Audi A4 Avant is praised for its smooth powertrain and pleasing handling dynamics, as well as its attractive design and elegant interior accommodations. Best of all, its top-notch safety ratings make it a solid choice for families. Not surprisingly, the A4 wagon is a Consumer Guide "Recommended Buy."
Just redesigned last year, the A4 Avant carries into the 2010 model year unchanged -- which is fine by critics, who appreciate its attractive design, luxurious accommodations, advanced safety features and everyday practicality. "This car has style worthy of the Hollywood glitterati and moves that would make Justin Timberlake step back," says Car and Driver. "Fabulous-looking, well dressed, quick on its feet, and with a damn good optional stereo."
While the 2010 A4 wagon ranks at the top of its class, it's not perfect. Reviewers consistently complain that its Multi-Media Interface (MMI) system isn't very intuitive. That, however, is common among German auto brands -- like BMW and its iDrive system. Still, Audi's MMI system has recently been updated for easier use, so it's better than previous iterations of the technology.

NEW AUDI A4

NEW AUDI A4 PHOTO
The NEW AUDI A4 2010 Audi A4 ranks 7 out of 15 Upscale Midsize Cars. This ranking is based on our analysis of 18 published reviews and test drives of the Audi A4, and our analysis of reliability and safety data.
Redesigned just last year, the Audi A4 is a viable alternative to the BMW 3-Series. Buyers looking for a sporty entry-level luxury sedan should test drive an all-wheel-drive A4 before making their decision.
The Audi A4, redesigned from the wheels up for 2009, enters the 2010 model year with no significant changes. It remains a fun car to drive, with sharp handling and a firm stance courtesy of its Quattro all-wheel-drive system (optional, but Audi says more than 80 percent of buyers opt for it). Audi's adjustable suspension, which allows the driver to electronically change the car's tuning for aggressive cornering or quiet commuting, is particularly well-reviewed. The combination, Consumer Guide says, means the A4 "adeptly balances around-town maneuverability with sporty road manners."
Shoppers should note that the A4 is the largest sedan in the midsize class - which means it's an opportunity for some buyers of more expensive luxury sedans (like the Lexus GS) to downsize and save some money. However, the A4's price can climb north of $40K with all of the options -- and you'll want most of them.
Audi is known for some of the best interiors in the automotive businesses, and the A4 offers an excellent example of why

NEW AUDI A5

NEW AUDI A5 PHOTO
The 2010 Audi A5 ranks 7 out of 9 Luxury Sports Cars. This ranking is based on our analysis of 27 published reviews and test drives of the Audi A5, and our analysis of reliability and safety data.
The 2010 Audi A5 offers an impressive combination of elegance and sporty handling dynamics. Though its performance capabilities fall short of the competition, the Audi A5 is still an exciting and rewarding vehicle to drive. In fact, Consumer Guide labels the 2010 Audi A5 a "Best Buy."
Critics report that the 2010 Audi A5 is not as sporty as competitors. Most, however, still favor it for its sporty, yet practical, virtues. "A5 and S5 are premium coupes that do many things well," explains Consumer Guide. "They have strong acceleration, capable handling, and the security of all-wheel drive. They're not as outright sporty as the two-seat Porsche Cayman, but they are more practical and undercut it on price, making them a strong choice

NEW AUDI A3

NEW AUDY A3 PHOTO WALLPAPER
AUDI A3 For 2010, Audi drops its previous base 3.2-liter V6 engine and introduces a 2.0-liter TDI clean diesel that makes 140 horsepower and dramatically improves fuel economy. A 2.0-liter 200-horsepower turbocharged engine is also still offered. Reviewers find the traditional engine offers more than enough power. Initial test drives for the diesel show it’s a good choice as well, although some reviewers say it’s not quite as sprightly as they might like. Reviewers say that drivers unaccustomed to diesels may simply need to get used to its feel. The A3's transmissions are well-reviewed. Many report smooth shifting from both the standard six-speed manual and optional S tronic automatic.
According to the EPA, the new diesel is rated at an impressive 30 mpg in the city and 42 mpg on the highway. These figures are excellent and make the A3 TDI the most fuel-efficient car in its class. Fuel economy for the gasoline engine isn’t too shabby either -- it’s rated at 21 mpg on the highway and 30 mpg in the city, a rating bested only by the Volkswagen GTI.

NEW ACURA ZDX

NEW ACURA ZDX 2010 PHOTO
NEW ACURA ZDX 2010, The ZDX comes with a 3.7-liter V6 that makes 300 horsepower (the same engine is used in the Acura MDX). It's paired with a six-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters, which test drivers say shifts seamlessly. Most reviewers say it offers ample power, although one or two say it's not quite peppy enough for the ZDX's weight.
The EPA has not yet rated the ZDX, but Acura expects it to achieve 16 mpg in the city and 22 mpg on the highway. This is about average for the luxury midsize SUV class -- slightly better than the Acura MDX and BMW X6, but short of the Lexus RX 350's excellent 18/25 rating.
The ZDX comes standard with Acura's Super Handling All-Wheel Drive, which contributes to its sporty ride. However, some reviewers report steering feel is too numb. The Integrated Dynamic System (IDS) active damper system, available with the Advance Package, stiffens suspension and increases steering feel for a sportier driving experience.

NEW ACURA TSX

NEW ACURA TSX 2010 PHOTO
NEW ACURA TSX 2010, The TSX's base four-cylinder engine makes 201 horsepower, which most reviewers say doesn't provide for a whole lot of oomph. The other option is a new 3.5-liter V6 engine that makes 280 horsepower and 254 pound-feet of torque. Most in the automotive press are impressed with the V6's great acceleration, although some lament the fact that it is only available with an automatic transmission.
The EPA gives the 2010 Acura TSX with the four-cylinder engine and automatic transmission a rating of 21/30 mpg city/highway which is good for the class, while the manual transmission clocks in at 20/28 mpg which is only average. Meanwhile, the new V6 engine gets a rating of 18/27 mpg city/highway which falls below that of most class competitors.
Most reviewers feel that the 2010 Acura TSX handles very well in tight twists and turns even despite its additional weight. That said, some reviewers still expect more immediate feedback than the car offers. Reviewers agree that understeer is still a concern. Some had a positive experience putting the car through the motions on twisty mountain roads but others complained about the sluggishness of the car's brake pedal under certain conditions or the constant correction needed for the electromechanical power steering.

NEW ACURA TL

NEW ACURA TL PHOTO
NEW ACURA TL 2010, Base versions of the TL feature a 3.5-liter V6 engine making 280 horsepower. SH-AWD editions carry a larger, 3.7-liter V6 making 305 horsepower. Reviewers, however, say the two provide nearly identical acceleration. The extra 25 hp of the SH-AWD serves to offset that car’s heavier weight, but not to make it any faster. Both versions are well-liked, offering a nice balance of power and quiet refinement.
A five-speed automatic transmission is standard. Reviewers have little to say about it. A six-speed manual transmission is new for the 2010 model year. Only a few reviewers have spent any time in manual-equipped TLs, but they seem to have walked away impressed.
The EPA says that front-wheel drive TLs should get 18 mpg in the city and 26 on the highway, while AWD versions should get 17/25 mpg -- meaning that there is little mileage penalty for the well-liked AWD system.

NEW ACURA RL

NEW ACURA RL 2010-PHOTO
NEW ACURA RL 2010 The RL is not the fastest of the large luxury sedans, but it is surprisingly powerful and very smooth, even up to high speeds. Only a five-speed automatic (with manual shift capability) is offered. Most competitors offer six speeds, but Acura's doesn't seem to hold the car back. It can be manually shifted via steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters.
Reviewers are impressed with Acura's new SH-AWD system, which gives the RL remarkable road grip even in high-speed cornering. The car's electrically-assisted, speed-sensitive steering doesn't win universal approval -- some say it feels artificial. Handling is also hurt by a very wide turning circle. The RL is easy to maneuver at high speeds, but can be tricky to park when compared to cars with tighter turning circles, like the Lexus GS or BMW 5-Series.

NEW ACURA RDX 2010

NEW ACURA RDX 2010-PHOTO
NEW ACURA RDX NEW ACURA RDX The 2010 RDX comes with a turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 240 horsepower. While test drivers find the engine plenty powerful, several complain about turbo lag. The new FWD model reduces curb weight, which could result in even speedier performance from the engine. According to the EPA, the all-wheel-drive models achieve 17/22 mpg city/highway, while the new FWD model achieves a slightly improved 19/24 mpg. The latter rating is the best in the RDX’s class, which makes it a great value when you consider that the RDX is also one of the least expensive luxury compact SUVs you can buy.
If you want a more powerful engine, consider the Audi Q5. It starts at about $5,000 more than the RDX and offers a slightly lower 18/23 base fuel economy rating – but it comes with a more powerful 3.2-liter V6 rated at 270 horsepower.

NEW ACURA MDX

NEW ACURA MDX 2010-PHOTO
The MDX continues to offer one of the best combinations of a high-tech cabin and smooth handling in its class. For 2010, it receives much-needed updates, including a new six-speed transmission.
The 2010 Acura MDX comes with a retuned 300-horsepower 3.7-liter V6 engine that test drivers find especially powerful. This is a lot of power considering that it’s the standard engine. For example, the Cadillac SRX costs considerably less than the MDX but provides only a 265-horspower 3.0-liter V6.
The EPA rates the 2010 MDX at 16/21 mpg city/highway. This rating is in the top half of the class, though there are a few less expensive models that have higher fuel economy. One of these is the SRX, which is rated at 18/25 city/highway and costs about $9,000 less than the MDX. However, the SRX’s engine isn’t as powerful as the MDX’s.

NEW SUBARU OUTBACK 2010

NEW SUBARU OUTBACK 2010 PHOTO
The 2.5-liter engine has more than enough power for everyday driving, but those looking for a little more get-up may prefer opting for the 256-horsepower in the 3.6-liter V6. The EPA gives the 2.5-liter gets 22 MPG in the city and 29 on the highway when paired with the CVT and 19 city /27 highway with the manual transmission. The V6 only comes with an automatic transmission and it gets 18 city / 25 highway.
The Outback's ride that more akin to that of a car than an SUV. Reviewers enjoy the handling for the most part, but are mixed on the steering.

NEW VOLKSWAGEN TIGUAN 2010

NEW VOLKSWAGEN TIGUAN 2010 PHOTO
The Tiguan comes with 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine that makes 200 horsepower and 207 pound-feet of torque. Base S models come with a six-speed manual transmission, while Wolfsburg and SEL models come with a six-speed automatic. Test drivers say the engine provides more than enough power, though a few of them have complaints about the transmissions.
While power is a plus for the Tiguan, fuel economy isn’t. According to the EPA, the FWD Tiguan achieves 19/26 mpg city/highway with the manual transmission and 18/24 with the automatic. The AWD model should net 18/24 mpg. These figures are on the low side for the compact SUV class. In fact, only a few SUVs do worse, and all of them are truck-based, off-road types (the Jeep Wrangler, for example). An important consideration is that the Tiguan also requires premium fuel, which means it will be more expensive to fill up than most competitors.
For better fuel economy, look at the Mazda CX-7. It costs $1,500 less than the Tiguan and also has an especially sport driving experience. On top of that, it has a higher 20/28 fuel economy rating. However, to get that good fuel economy you’ll have to stick with the four-cylinder 161-horsepower base engine, which can’t match the Tiguan for power. The available turbocharged engine makes 244 horsepower and accelerates from 0 to 60 even faster than the Tiguan, but it nets even worse fuel economy.

NEW JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE 2010

NEW JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE 2010 PHOTO
the 2010 Jeep Grand Cherokee delivers excellent off-road handling and good performance on road from its array of engines -- three in all, including a new 6.1-liter Hemi V8.
Since the diesel and 4.7-liter V8 engines have been discontinued for 2010, the 2010 Grand Cherokee now offers three engine options: A base 3.7-liter V6, a 5.7-liter V8 HEMI, and the high-performing SRT8 model's 6.1-liter V8 HEMI. Reviewers find power more than adequate, except in the case of the sluggish base V6 engine. They recommend either of the V8 options instead. A five-speed automatic transmission is standard and a multi-speed overdrive automatic is a no-cost option for some models.
According to the EPA, the most fuel efficient Grand Cherokee, the 2WD with the V6 engine, achieves 16/21 mpg city/highway. However, models with the 6.1-liter V8 engine, while very powerful, can achieve as low as 12/16 mpg -- making fuel economy a definite weakness.

the 2010 Jeep Grand Cherokee solid enough for on-road driving, but where it really stands out is in its off-road performance. The Grand Cherokee is available with a choice of three four-wheel drive systems. Quadra-Trac I, standard on the Laredo 4x4 and SRT8 4x4, is a full-time system that features a single-speed transfer case. Quadra-Trac II, standard on the Limited 4x4, provides a two-speed transfer case. Quadra-Drive II, optional on the Limited 4x4 and V8 Laredo 4x4, features a full-time transfer case with Electronic Limited Slip Differentials.

NEW LAND ROVER LR4 2010

FOTO NEW LAND ROVER LR4 2010
the 2010 Land Rover LR4 offers better on-road performance than ever, while continuing to shine off the beaten path.
The LR4 features a new 5.0-liter V8 engine shared with Jaguar and other Land Rover models and paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. It makes 375 horsepower and 375 pound-feet of torque - figures that are a big improvement over the previous 4.4-liter V8s, which weren't powerful enough to move the LR3's heavy frame. Thanks to new direct-injection technology, the added power doesn't take a toll on fuel economy, which remains unchanged. According to the EPA, the LR4 is expected to net 12 mpg in the city and 17 on the highway.

NEW TOYOTA FJ CRUISER 2010

NEW TOYOTA FJ CRUISER 2010-2011 FOTO
The FJ Cruiser does exactly what it's supposed to do: Excel as a top-notch off-roading machine. But it's still a decent enough performer on the pavement, even though the non-off-roaders in its class offer smoother rides and quieter engines. For off-roading, the FJ Cruiser offers an All-Terrain Package that comes with a locking rear differential, A-TRAC Active Traction Control and floating ball-type multi-information display (with an inclinometer, compass and temperature).

The 2010 Toyota FJ Cruiser features an updated 4.0-liter V6 engine that makes 259 horsepower. It is available with a five-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission or an optional six-speed manual for the full-time 4WD model. Along with the added power, the new engine comes with better fuel economy -- a plus considering that low gas mileage was a major complaint on the 2009 model.
According to the EPA, the 2010 FJ Cruiser is rated at 17/22 city/highway in two-wheel drive -- that's a one mile-per-gallon increase over the previous model. The 4WD model also achieves increased ratings: 17/21 with the automatic transmission and 15/19 with the manual. These figures are a little better than average for an off-road SUV, but they fall in the bottom half of their class when compared to non-off-roaders. The Jeep Patriot and Suzuki Grand Vitara are the two off-roaders that achieve the best fuel economy.

NEW TOYOTA 4RUNNER 2010

NEW TOYOTA 4RUNNER 2010-2011 FOTO
While reviewers criticized the 2009 4Runner's poor fuel economy, the new 2010 model's fuel economy ratings should alleviate those complaints. Even better, the 4Runner continues to be an excellent off-roader while also offering a relatively smooth ride on the pavement.

Under the hood, the 2010 4Runner packs a more fuel efficient 4.0-liter 270-horsepower V6 engine that makes a whopping 34 more horsepower than the 2009 model. It's paired with a five-speed automatic transmission. The optional V8 is no longer offered, though now a 2.7-liter 157-horsepower four-cylinder engine is optional for 2WD SR5 models only. Power is excellent from the new V6 engine, though some reviewers miss the extra torque of the previous V8 option. Reviewers have not yet tested the less powerful four-cylinder engine.
A plus for 2010 is the improved fuel economy. According to the EPA, the 2WD 4Runner achieves 17/23 mpg city/highway, while 4WD models achieve 17/22 mpg (compare that at 16/21 for previous models). Those figures make the 4Runner's fuel economy better than most off-roaders and even put it on par with some of its crossover competitors. If fuel economy is a major concern for you, consider the Jeep Patriot. It costs about $10,000 less than the 4Runner, possesses capable off-road skills and boasts a 23/28 mpg rating.

NEW NISSAN X TERRA 2010

NEW NISSAN XTERRA 2010-2011 PICTURE
The 2010 Nissan Xterra is a good option for those who want a rugged off-roader with plenty of utility and space. Its 4.0-liter V6 engine has lots of power, especially for its class. However, its on-road ride simply can't compete with its car-based crossover competitors such as the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4.
With a 4.0-liter 261-horsepower V-6 engine, the 2010 Xterra has plenty of power for any situation and boasts a 5,000-pound maximum towing capacity, which is excellent for its class. However, all that power impacts its fuel economy, which is a major drawback. The EPA NEW NISSAN XTERRA 2010 is rates the 2WD model at 16/20 mpg city/highway rating with the six-speed manual transmission and 15/21 with the five-speed automatic. The 4WD model nets 16/20 and 15/20 with the manual and automatic, respectively. Several other off-road SUVs offer better fuel economy TERRA 2011, with the Jeep Patriot achieving the most miles per gallon.

NEW FORD EXPLORER 2010

NEW FORD EXPLORER 2010 FOTO
The 2010 Explorer is available in three trims: the base XLT, Eddie Bauer, XLT Sport, and top-of-the-line Limited. It’s unchanged for 2010, but buyers should note that Ford is expected to build the 2011 Explorer on a car-based platform rather than a truck-based one.
